INEC Reveals How Many New Voters Have Registered In 2017 (See Here)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said no fewer than 3.63 million new voters have been registered in ongoing Continuous Voter Registration across the country.

The Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this known at a retreat for Resident Electoral Commissioners in Uyo on Friday.

Yakubu said that the voter registration would continue until 60 days to the 2019 general elections.

He said that the retreat was organised to acquaint the newly-appointed RECs with the commission’s activities.

According to him, the retreat will fine tune ways of improving the management and conduct of ongoing continuous voter registration.

“For the first time in the history of INEC, citizens who have attained the voting age of 18 years and those who could not register during the previous CVR, now have the opportunity to do so.

“So far, 3, 630, 529 new voters have been registered,’’ Yakubu said.

He noted that one persistent challenge facing the commission had been low level of voter turnout in recent elections.

He said, “We must redesign and develop more effective voter education strategies and platforms while we continue to work with other stakeholders to galvanise voters to come out and vote.”

I Have Lived Up To Expectation Of Osun People – Aregbesola

The Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on Thursday said he has lived up to the expectation of the majority of the people in the state, in terms of basic infrastructure and necessary needs of the people.

He maintained that the major programmes and policies of his administration, specifically in capital projects and human development remained of a great benefit to the masses.

The Governor made the remarks while speaking at an Award/ Lecture programme, organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Osun State as part of its Press Week.

“If government lives for only those in government alone, then government must have lost its value, hence the reason why our government prefers to make projects that benefits majority of the people of Osun.

“The essence of government is compassion, and the primary role of government is to be compassionate and be concerned on the welfare and well-being of the people.

“Development should be for all citizens and not about few people. It is not about a section of the people but that which will positively affect all, civil servants who are important, significant and germane in the society.

“The roads that government built will be used by all, including the civil servants, the drainages we are building will save the civil servants from flood, the security we are improving upon to make sure that life is lived well will equally affect the civil servants. That is development for all of us”, he said.

Aregbesola, therefore, charged the media to set agenda for new order that will engender speedy development and sustainable progress.

He opined that the media, in the pre-independence, era set agenda for self rule and independence through media activism.

“Media must set agenda for government. It is unfortunate that the media has painfully refused to set agenda for the government in a way that will aid development and wellbeing of the people.

PDP Has Become Reference Point In Nigeria’s Democracy – Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan

Former president Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday, December 9, said the Peoples Democratic Party has become a reference point as Nigeria moves toward another election.

Jonathan made this known on Saturday, December 9, in Abuja, while delivering a goodwill message at the party’s national convention.

He said the party had over the years remained focused and resilient in spite of several challenges, adding that he believed the party would remain foremost in leadership.

According to him, ”The PDP is a party with an indelible history and principles, and expressed optimism that the party will remain at the forefront of leadership by example.

“Ours is a party with an indelible history and proven record on its tradition and we have been consistent in standing firm.

“PDP is the only party that from the beginning, we have not changed our name or our identity in any form, we do not change based on election cycle. PDP is the only stable party in Nigeria.’’

“Today is a unique day because we are going to elect leaders that will steer the activities of the party for the next general elections and we charge those that will win the election today to carry everybody along.’’

He, however, urged all leaders to remain committed to the purpose and work for the interest of the party and the country.

Jonathan commended the outgoing national caretaker committee for its leadership and doggedness, adding that it had provided energetic and purposeful leadership at a very critical and trying period in the party’s political history.

Also speaking, former vice president, Namadi Sambo charged the delegates to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner to ensure a free and fair election.

Sambo said he was confident that the delegates would elect “the right people to serve as leaders in the party.’’

Delegates are expected to elect 32 new executive that would lead the party in the next four years at the convention.

The former president made this known while addressing journalists after a visit to the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, at the government house in Port Harcourt on Sunday, December 3.

Abuse Naira And Go To Six Months Jail” – CBN Warns Nigerians

The Central Bank of Nigeria has warned Nigerians that anyone caught abusing the Naira would be prosecuted and if convicted, the person risked six months in jail or fine of N50,000.

This was disclosed in Calabar, Cross River State on Friday by Mr. Samuel Shuaibu, an official of the Currency Operation Department of the CBN in Abuja, during the commencement of a “CBN Fair” to sensitize campaign for residents in the state on the appropriate use of the Naira.

Shuaibu said that the abuse of the naira was not in line with the CBN’s policy, adding that offenders would henceforth be arrested and prosecuted.

According to him, the awareness programme was aimed at sensitising the public on the need to accord respect to naira, online transfer system, how to identify fake currency notes, how to approach the CBN for complaints amongst others.

He lamented the fact that Nigerians accord more respects to the American Dollar more than the naira, saying that Nigerians ought to appreciate and value the naira because it serves as a symbol of national identity.

He said:

“The naira has suffered abuse from a majority of Nigerians. Today, we find some people spraying the naira in occasions, soiling it, writing on it, squeezing it while others are hawking it.

The CBN spent a lot of money in the printing of this naira notes. We urge Nigerians to respect the naira and value it. Anyone caught abusing the naira will risk a jail term of six months or pay a fine of N50,000.”

Babangida’s Spokesman Reacts To Report He Asked Atiku Not To Run In 2019

A former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, on Friday declared his support for Atiku Abubakar, as the former vice president intensifies consultations for a presidential run in 2019.

Mr. Babangida, Nigeria’s leader from 1985-1993, said media reports that he advised Mr. Abubakar not to run for election during a closed-door meeting Thursday was ‘laughable’ because it was ‘sponsored’.

“Anybody who has sponsored such report was just being unfair” to Messrs. Babangida and Abubakar, Kassim Afegbua, a spokesperson for the former military leader, told Sources on Friday evening.

Mr. Afegbua said no one knew the outcome of the meeting because it was held behind closed-doors amongst the two leaders.

The comments came a day after the two leaders met at the hilltop residence of Mr. Babangida in Minna, the Niger State capital, around noon Thursday.

Media accounts of the meeting said Mr. Abubakar angrily left his host because he was advised not to run against President Muhammadu Buhari.

The reports further speculated that the unfriendly face Mr. Abubakar allegedly wore indicated that he was rejected by Mr. Babangida.

“The report is very, very untrue,” Mr. Afegbua said. “When I read the report, I was laughing. Because it is far from what they both discussed.”

“Number one, IBB will not discourage anyone from seeking office. IBB will encourage anyone to seek election,” the spokesperson added.

Mr. Afegbua said the relationship between his principal and his host remains cordial, warning reporters to stop playing politics with people’s relationship.

“They had a very useful political discussion. IBB also has a good relationship with Atiku. It’s not good to play politics with the relationship of people.”

Similarly, Paul Ibe, a spokesperson for Mr. Abubakar said since the meeting was held by only the two leaders, it would be difficult for anyone to know the details.

“Except those who were carrying these fake speculations were flying on the wall, there’s no way anyone would have known what happened,” Mr. Ibe said. “The report is a figment of the imagination of people.”

Mr. Ibe said the two leaders have been friends for a long time, and the outcome of their meeting was positive.

“Both leaders have enjoyed a mutual relationship for many years and what I gathered was that the meeting was very, very fruitful,” he added.

On Sunday, Mr. Abubakar returned to the PDP for the third time since 2007 when he left the party after serving eight years on its platform as a vice-president.

The move came a little over a week after he resigned from the All Progressives Congress. He is expected to slug it out with President Buhari in 2019, if the incumbent’s recent signals of a possible re-election bid take hold.

2019 Election: I’m Shocked That PDP Wants To Come Back To Power – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said he is surprised that in spite of the atrocities committed by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, it is still making efforts to come back to power in 2019.

Speaking at an interactive session with community leaders to mark the president’s 2-day working visit to Kano on Thursday, Mr Buhari said Nigerians would never forget PDP’s 16 years of misgovernment.

According to Mr Buhari, corruption thrived during the administration of PDP, lamenting that the Nigerian treasury was rendered empty during the party’s reign.
He added that the party performed woefully on Security and economy.

He said the change agenda of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was to fight Boko Haram insurgency, corruption and revamp the economy, adding that his government was recording successes, but fighting corruption was the most difficult among the three agenda.

Mr Buhari added that Nigerians must understand the difference between democratic and military administration, adding that since his military regime, corruption was fighting back, as he himself ended in jail for about 3 years.

When I was a military head-of-State, I arrested and jailed some politicians on alleged corruption. Only two of them, late Bilyaminu Usman, former state minister, and Mallam Adamu Ciroma were found clean. But since that time, corruption was fighting back, as I myself was not jailed for more than two years.

This is a country where we found a judge, hiding foreign and domestic currencies running into millions, and 4 diplomatic passports in his house. This is the man that sends people to 20 years in jail for committing corruption, now he is found wanting. Mr Buhari lamented.

He also recalled that from 1999 to 2014, Nigeria produced 2.1 million Barrel of crude oil per day at the rate of at least $100, lamenting that the money were nowhere to be found under the opposition PDP.

Unfortunately, when we came on board, the price of oil crashed to $28. From $28, it rose to $37 up to $40. I went to the Central Bank of Nigeria, because everywhere in the world knew what Nigeria got at that time. I then asked, what about what has been saved for the country, I was told at the CBN that nothing was left in the treasury but liabilities.

I couldn’t believe it because it is lie. They said the money was used in food and fuel importation, while we produce our own food in the southeast, southwest, northeast and Northwest. Most of the peoples in these regions produce their own food because they are not government workers, as such, they can’t buy foreign food. This is a lie.

When we investigated how the fuel was imported, sadly, we found that more than half of the money were going in bogus deals between the importers and the buyers in connivance with the CBN officials. They don’t care about the plight of the remaining Nigerians, he emphasized.

I Was Almost Rescued From Prison In Commando-Style – Ex-President Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday morning recounted how he was almost set free from Yola prisons commando-style by “international friends”.

Although he did not state the year, he was in prison from 1995 to 1998 on allegations of coup plot against the military government of Sani Abacha.

He said when he was sent to prison, “some of my international friends sent a message that they were ready to storm the Yola prisons and rescue me in a helicopter and take me to safety in Cameroon, but I said no, if you do that I will not leave the prison”.

Obasanjo was speaking at the 20th anniversary of the death of Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a retired major general and his deputy when he was military head of state from 1976-1979.

Both Obasanjo and Yar’Adua were arrested in 1995 over what many considered a phantom coup allegation by Abacha.
